Sociocultural mentality need to be
updated!
Sri Lanka is a country firmly stitched to its society and culture.
And the bad news is, this mentality within our community is outdated. It is not
blaming nor disrespecting the tradition. But trying to include more new, modern
ideas and rituals to it.
Looking everything in a doubtful way is a fair point,
considering the status of the current society we live. But is that 100%
justifiable? Blaming the society is easier than taking the responsibility of it
as a member of the society. So we should change ourselves and motivate others
to the correct path. This can be done with the determination of each and every
citizen.
This out dated sociocultural mentality of our Sri Lankan’s
lead many problems such as rapes, robberies, forgeries etc. being updated is
not being addicted to the western culture, but it means looking at the incident
of the society in a practical and in a justifiable manner. For an example, if a
boy and a girl talk with each other in a public area, people stare at them as
if they are criminals. Talking with each other in a public area and in a
private area, are totally two different situations. But our mentality is made
to suspect each other’s actions and to become a part of the problem creators.
Then how will people be socialized? isn’t it unjustifiable?
And why can’t a boy be a best friend of a girl? And the
vise-versa? Is that a mistake or an irresponsible action, to be blamed or to be
punished? This is the reason why our society is full of corruptions and
misbehavior. When a boy is a best friend of a girl, he will gradually
understand and learn to respect the opposite sex. And the same applies with the
girls too. Hence, the problem of the society will be reduced and a good and a
safer environment will be gifted for our future generation too. So, if you and
I want this to be done, we should be practical minded and always be supportive
and understandable with each other. Especially the elders of this society
should be guided by the Youngers and they should help them realize what the
present world is leading to.
